Horseback riding in Alaska

I grew up in Alaska and love the outdoors, so when I moved to Reno, I was a bit wary because I didn’t think I would feel at home. But I was surprised with all the activities, such as biking, snowboarding, hiking, and visiting Lake Tahoe. I also fell in love with my new college – University of Nevada, Reno, where I grew to love the journalism department.

I found my love of journalism and reporting the news when I was in high school. I took a special, hands-on, ‘radio and television production’ course in tenth grade. I then interned at a news station soon after and realized I enjoy writing more than TV reporting. So I joined my high school newspaper staff and gained experience. When I moved to a brand new high school my senior year to be a part of the first graduating class, I immediately sought out the newspaper department. I became the first Editor-in-Chief my new high school’s newspaper! If it weren’t for this, I probably wouldn’t have made it through. I was burnt out and ready to move on, but my love of writing, editing, designing, and leading a classroom kept my spirits up until graduation.

I love to travel and have been to Mexico, Canada, parts of Europe and Central America. I lived and studied abroad in Costa Rica for nine months and it was the best experience of my life. I learned a new culture, a new language, and a different way of life while studying in a foreign country.

Since being back in the United States after my year in Central America, I began training for triathlons. I was told I couldn’t do one, and I proved everyone wrong! I accomplished my first triathlon this year and plan on doing many more and maybe even an Ironman in the future. I live a healthy lifestyle and love to work out, which is why I decided to take on another minor – Health Ecology. I figure this is my time to learn and have fun!… I can always work when I’m older.

In the future I want to write for a health magazine. I love to write in journalistic context and I will never give writing up for anything. Because I lately have found my new joy of health, I want to join the two and live my dream job. I don’t know where I will end up, but I want to be where my career is so I can fulfill my love of writing.
